This is my first cycling computer, and even though I haven’t used one before, the interface of the Garmin 840 is really practical. I chose this model because it includes a widget to control the music playing on your cellphone. So far, I’m totally happy with it. It offers the same functions as the Garmin 1040 but in a more compact size.

This is a gadget lovers dream. There’s so much you can fiddle with. Incredibly customizable with every feature you can think of. The ClimbPro feature stands out as my favorite. Battery life is excellent as well. Switching profiles between my mountain bike and road bike is very handy. I traded in my Wahho Roam for this and couldn’t be happier. I can’t think of a single thing to improve.

I have owned at least 6 Garmin products over the years, and they have always performed well. This one is no exception. It is a nice upgrade over the Edge 820 I had been using.

Admittedly I’m a Garmin fanboi. I’m fully invested into their ecosystem and I love the integrated metrics their devices provide, so I thought it was a no brainer to upgrade my Edge 530 to an Edge 840 Solar.
First, the good. The interface is great. It’s very intuitive and things are as you would expect. Configuring data screens on your phone vs on the Edge itself is SOO much easier.
Full time ClimbPro, without have a route loaded. This is good, but it seems to have the bug that DC Rainmaker and GPLlama and a whole host of other Youtubers has described. It will often start well in to a climb and just be off. I’ll be at a steep section and ClimbPro will show me at a mild section, and vice versa. Then I’ll crest the top and it will show there are still a couple hundred feet to go. I’m confident this will eventually get fixed, but until then it’s kind of just a gimmick, it used to be great when it worked.
Now for the Solar. I give Garmin a lot of credit for the innovations of adding solar, as far as I know, no one else is doing it and you can bet they are now looking at it. That said, it’s not worth the premium. I live in Colorado, we have bright sun all day long here. I did a 2hr ride at dusk at 5pm, had the Edge flat like Garmin suggests, got zero solar time. Ok, so it was encroaching on evening you say? Well, I did a 2.5hr ride at 11am, in bright full sun, I got 14min back. A couple days later I did a 2hr 1pm ride in bright full sun and got 9min back. Not only that, but the solar screen on the 840 is dimmer in contrast, so you have to run a lot more brightness to see it, which sucks the battery big time. The battery widget now shows you estimated time remaining as you change brightness.
Overall, is it a worthwhile upgrade over the 530, probably, but not the solar, go with the non-solar.

I have been a Garmin user for many years. I love all their products. I have watched as their products have become more reliable and user-friendly. The Edge 840 is the latest, and in my opinion, the best of their head units. Everything works and works well. The wireless sensors, the rear radar unit, the front headlight, the HR monitor—they all work great together.
Syncing up all the various components and sensors is seamless and works right, every time. As a bonus I can sync up my Dexcom G7 CGM and get instant glucose readings during my bike rides—no more fear of bonking during a long ride. The touch screen works great, not even raindrops, or perspiration, affects the display. The 840, unlike the 830, also has buttons which work effectively and quickly. The new GPS chip is far more accurate than in the past. The Climb Pro feature is awesome. The 840 has far more features that I could ever hope to use, but the features that I do use work exceedingly well.
If you are deciding between the 840 and the 540, I would recommend the 840.

I bought this as a replacement for my Garmin 510 which finally broke after 10 years. The 840 has a very good color screen. It has a touch screen as well as side buttons. It has all the functions of the 510 and then some. I only use the basic functions.
In order to see the screen in daylight on my bike, I have to turn the screen brightness all the way up. A downside to doing this is the battery then only lasts 3-4 rides. I’ve already had it die on me during a ride. The 510 used to last 12+ rides.
I rate it 3-4 stars because of needing to turn up the brightness which results in only a few rides being recorded before a recharge.

Garmin is becoming my go to company for measurements. I have the S2 scale for weight. The HRM Pro Plus Blood Pressure Monitor, the Garmin Power Pedals, the Heart Rate Monitor Pro Plus, my Garmin Radar Light Varia 515 (non video camera) and now this fantastic Garmin Edge 840 Cycle Computer. All these are integrated and synced to the Garmin Connect App. It’s a lot of good health information to analyze to make smarter fitness decisions. Like the 840 because it starts instantly, no waiting. Gives me around 63 measurements in a single ride. It’s pretty speedy. I got the 1040 but didn’t like it. I like this smaller size. Links with Strava. It’s pricey but all Garmin is pricey. Measure to Motivate. I’m 70 and I can still ride 100 miles. I generally do 20 mile rides 3 or 4 times a week. Love this pairs with Shimano dI2 shifters so I have a visual of what gear I’m in and the radar lets me know vehicles behind me accurately. Recommended.

Like Apple once you get one you will eventually want them all.
Like a demanding wife who wants more jewelry Garmin has me buying the whole ecosystem. Don’t buy this unless you plan to buy a heart rate strap, a radar light, power pedals, a watch, an emergency radio, and a trainer.
This thing works great most of the time and honestly can’t believe I biked for 2 years without it. Garmin knows how to make the battery last forever and it’s been easy to use.

It’s an amazing addition to my cycling and makes data tracking and viewing so much easier. I recommend the speed and cadence sensor as well for more detailed data. The screen is bright enough for daylight and the battery lasts long enough even on 100mile rides.

I’m really glad I purchased this. It exceeds all my expectations. After reading the reviews and watching videos, I nearly passed on the upgraded model with solar. I splurged as I’m a sucker for all things solar. I’m actually blown away that I’m getting 20% battery return in high sun environments. I had over 17.1% (20 min) gain on an almost 2 hour ride with sun and lots of shade from trees. The battery lasts for a LONG time. I would like to be able to do more in the app to customize screens, etc. The touch screen works really well and there are buttons for all actions if needed because of gloves, etc. I had a bit of an issue with loading the USA maps on it at first and had to finagle things a bit. Typical Garmin issues. Overall, a great product and was the sweet spot for me with all the options available. What a great buy. I’m very happy.

I had not bought a Garmin since the model 510. Back then I got rid of it due to the lack of organization of features and where they live (like having all sensor set up in one place, except for the heart rate sensor, hidden somewhere else). Garmin has been a sales leader in bike GPS for a long time. But there user interface has always been pretty horrible and non-intuitive (poorly organized as well). The crazy thing is—long time Garmin owners do not see it. They have memorized the UI/UX. New owners struggle to learn where sensors and settings are. If you figure something out, but do not ride for a few days, you cant remember where a setting is. Especially if you move the computer between different bikes. Having said all this is why I swore off Garmins after the 510 (including its short batt life).
Now to the present: I needed a new bike computer. the Bike shop owner shows me a Garmin 840. “Its the greatest thing since sliced bread!” He convinces to buy the 840, even though his shop is out of stock. Says the UI is improved. Im like “no! Garmins typically have poor UI/UX. Their Devs are too close to the code.” Long story, short: I let the bike shop owner convince me to try again. So I bought the 840.
After the first ride I was convinced i’d been duped. The unit was trying to think for me. I just wanted to initially see my power, cadence and speed numbers. But no. it had all kind of things turned on by default. and on the trail or road you cant figure out how to fix it. I lost a couple of rides due to it not working correctly and not being able to get out of some of what the screen was trying to display. Also, when there is some sort of error, it displays it in the tiniest font. I could never find how to make an error message font/typeface bigger. There are way more issues then I can recall to write about.
I finally sold it and bought a Wahoo Elemnt. Way more intuitive. I Have not yet lost a ride or struggle to define a sensor or even check the detail settings of a sensor (At least the HR is consideed asensor nowa. Of course I sold the 840 to a long time Garmin customer, so he has all of his Garmin-isms memorized. Me…I was disappointed that Garmin had not really improved their device usability in 10 yrs. But it is jammed full of a ton of stuff. Of course, if your eyes struggle with near-sighted vision, as some of us are born with and others have the sight isssue come on in their 40s, reviewing notifications and errors will be a struggle. The garmin is definitely not for you, regardless of the UI/UX.

I have had the opportunity to put a couple hundred miles on my 840. It has been a pleasant upgrade from my 830 (which had about 25,000 miles on it before the faceplate started to separate from the device).
While the 840 seems slightly dimmer than the 830, I have adapted to this attenuation and hardly notice it now. The screen of the 840 is sufficiently large and the display is bold and quite prominent.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and am enjoying the device immensely on my gravel bike!

I bought the Edge 840 to replace my Edge 810, after the weather/water seal on the power button degraded. I’ve spent two weeks with Garmin Support trying to get the new unit operational. Support has no idea what they are doing. The 840 when first connected to Garmin Express needed to update its preinstalled maps of Europe and North America. Immediately upon trying to update an error message occurred. Support had me use Express as an administrator after removing and reinstalling Express. The 840 had 27.4GB of preinstalled files. Support was concerned as to what those files could be and had me upload zipped files of my Garmin folder. Support was sure that there were extraneous files preventing the updating of the maps. My return window with Amazon had closed. Support finally agreed to exchange my 840 for a new one. The new unit had the same 27.4GB of preinstalled files. The new 840 had the same error message and could not update its maps. Support wanted screen shots of my laptop’s memory, insisting the problem was with my computer or my ISP. After some research I realized my 840 had insufficient memory to update the installed maps. Going to “manage maps” in Express, I removed Europe and could update North America. I then removed North America and could update Europe. So, ins short, Garmin has produced a unit with 32GB of storage that cannot accommodate both of its 2023 maps for Europe and North America. Not a big deal as I can change the maps before traveling.
The big deal is that support didn’t know the size of the files preinstalled in the 840 and could not recommend the easy fix that i found on my own. Several weeks of emails, uploading of Garmin files for Support to review and, of course, a non-working 840 while I waited for a resolution that Support could not provide.

The operating system has been updated with the new style also on Fenix 8 and other models I’m sure. Both touch screen and a full set of buttons makes operation easier. Both the GPS and Heart Rate are noticeably more accurate. Even though the screen is the same size and same pixel count, it is more vibrant and easier to read. Upgrading from Edge 530/830 was a breeze since all the customized screens for different activities easily ported over with a single command. Overall a nice upgrade with zero complaints.

I have been using Garmin computers forever. This generation is improved with the latest technology, only some of which I routinely use. But I like the volume of information it provides. I thought I would not like the touch screen, but I was wrong. I also have a Garmin 1040, but it is too large to fit well on some of my bikes. This one is easier to mount as it winds up sideways. Still easy to view.

Works great and easily connects to sensors. I took 1 star away because the solar ability isn’t worth an extra $100. Unless you live in a super sunny area with no cloud cover and only ever bike during the hours of 12-4 pm, you just won’t get enough sun exposure to add any meaningful charge. The best I’ve ever seen is 5 min added on an 1:20 ride on a clear day midafternoon ride, but most days, the amount of extra charge I get amounts to less than a minute of battery life.

Bike computers all have a ton of information these days. I have been using Garmin units since the Edge 500 and they have always been rock-solid. I upgraded from an Edge 530, which was a great device for both road and mountain biking because a couple of the features of the X40 line caught my attention. The main one was the automatic climb pro feature. The older units have climb pro, but only if you are following a course. 95% of my rides are not following a specific course and with the new Garmin, it will recognize that I am going uphill and give me the distance to the top of the climb, the average and instant grade, and track my progress. I find that super helpful as I try to motivate myself to push a little bit harder. The other feature that I liked was the road hazard notifications. If other users report a pothole or other hazard, it will alert you as you come close to the area. It works great. I find the screen size of the device is big enough for me to see several data fields and I like how easy it is to read. The battery life with the solar is outstanding. I did a 200+ mile ride and used less than half of the battery. The value is great if you ride a lot like I do. I actually like the older display a little better than the newer 850 version and it has all of the same compatibility. I am super happy with my purchase.

Seriously, I’ll never use more than 25% of what this thing does. But I’ll never ride without it again. I have a profile for road and another for mountain. The customizable screen lets me see exactly what I want and need and nothing more or less. It’s a bit fidgety to learn, you will need to spend some time, but it’s so worth figuring it out. Sometimes I just go ride. I point at a landmark feature and just go. It has saved me from getting lost in the burbs and the wilderness many times. The return home feature is outstanding. Other times I look at google earth and plan a route that I’ve never been on before. Using Garmin connect on my PC I’ve been able to plot trails to exacting accuracy. Then upload them to the Garmin. I always end up where I think I will. Battery lasts for many rides, for me. (My rides are usually less than 25 miles.)
My only complaint is that it’s hard to talk some of my friends into buying one because of the price. In my opinion the price is justified. I wish my friends would take the plunge because another feature this device has is pairing with friends. They will become blips on your map. You’ll never lose a rider again!
Brilliant piece of kit. I’ve never used a cycling computer before but it’s better than any app I’ve tried on my phone. even the one that came with my ebike. The Garmin automatically connected to my bike and shows me all the pertinent metrics.

I picked up the Garmin Edge 840 Solar and I absolutely love it. Setup was quick and painless, and the Garmin Connect app made customizing my data screens incredibly easy. I have different layouts for different ride types, and switching between them is seamless.
The touchscreen is a great upgrade. Swiping between views during a ride feels natural and makes it much easier to access maps, stats, and training screens on the fly. It is responsive even while riding.
I went with the solar version, although it is hard to tell how much of a measurable benefit it has provided so far. The battery life is already excellent, so it is tough to say what percentage of that is solar versus normal usage. That said, the battery lasts a long time, which is exactly what I wanted.
Overall, this is an awesome bike computer with tons of features, great battery life, and an easy-to-use interface. Highly recommended for anyone looking to upgrade.

The operating system has been updated with the new style also on Fenix 8 and other models I’m sure. Both touch screen and a full set of buttons makes operation easier. Both the GPS and Heart Rate are noticeably more accurate. Even though the screen is the same size and same pixel count, it is more vibrant and easier to read. Upgrading from Edge 530/830 was a breeze since all the customized screens for different activities easily ported over with a single command. Overall a nice upgrade with zero complaints.

How I love Garmin.
Like Apple once you get one you will eventually want them all.
Like a demanding wife who wants more jewelry Garmin has me buying the whole ecosystem. Don’t buy this unless you plan to buy a heart rate strap, a radar light, power pedals, a watch, an emergency radio, and a trainer.
This thing works great most of the time and honestly can’t believe I biked for 2 years without it. Garmin knows how to make the battery last forever and it’s been easy to use.

This is my first cycling computer and I absolutely love it. The screen size fits in tons of data, you can customize it to see the data you want, it syncs easily with my Fenix 7S Pro, and it works great with the sensors. I’ve used it for both outdoor rides and indoor rides on a bike trainer (Wahoo Kickr). For both activities, I’ve been beyond impressed. I love the touchscreen, the colors, and graphics. Highly recommend!

I have used a Garmin 520 and then the 530 for the last 7 years. After being hit by a car I needed to replace my Garmin and decided on the 840 for the touch screen. I’m glad I did, it’s a feature I didn’t know I needed – but worth the extra cost in my opinion.
